Action Plan
-
Step 1 - Awareness and Knowledge
All sectors of the economy will be affected in one way or another by environmental constraints. To educate yourself and your company about the environmental challenges is a small investment to prepare for what lies ahead.
-
Step 2 - Structure and Strategy
Every strategy needs a structure. We recommend that you organize an internal team to identify your company’s biggest environmental challenges. Understanding your main challenges is an important first step in creating a constructive and profitable environmental strategy.
-
Step 3 - Vision and footprint goals
It is important to set a clear vision and detailed goals. This will help you communicate what you are striving towards and it will also help encourage your colleagues and other stakeholders to find new solutions. An essential part in defining a vision and relevant goals is measuring your footpring. You need to measure your emissions and resource utilisation in order to define a starting point. The first time you measure your footprint can be time consuming, but once the structure and experience is in place you can easily integrate the process with normal reporting.
-
Step 4 – Implementation
This is where you get to work and start moving towards your goals. It is vital not to treat your environmental challenges as a one off project, it needs to be integrated into your normal business process. To view it as a continous improvement process works well where you follow up your actions, set new targets and continue to improve over and over again. The ISO model is one way to structure your implementation.
-
Step 5 - Communication
What to communicate and when is a tricky question. Who needs to know what and how to optimise communication to strengthen company branding internally and externally. A well structured and defined strategy will simplify communication and reduce the risk of negative surprises. Many of the forefront companies are openly accounting their footprint and acknowledge that much improvement remains to be done, but you as the consumer will gain trust and loyalty to companies that are moving in the right direction.
